Jeff Ifrah to Host Panel on iGaming with NBA

GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world.

Washington, D.C. - February 14, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

Attorney and iGaming investor and legal expert Jeff Ifrah has made his mark on the upcoming industry of virtual gaming and is being asked to lead a panel at the Global Interactive Summit and Expo to discuss the future of the growing market and the legalities surrounding sports betting and regulations. Ifrah will be presenting and moderating an interview with Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the National Basketball Association, Dan Spillane, at the GiGse trade convention (Global Interactive Gaming Summit and Expo) in San Francisco to discuss the NBA’s significant shift in its opinion on sports-betting, and the future possibility of its regulation in the U.S.

Since 2011, GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world who come to network, learn about new industry trends, and stay current on evolving gaming law. Ifrah’s highly anticipated interview with Spillane, which marks the first time a professional sports representative has participated in a gaming conference, will be enhanced by previously recorded interviews of leaders within the English Premier League, and leading US legislators pushing for sports betting regulation, all of which have been produced exclusively for the GiGse plenary session.

The NBA created a media stir with a notable November 2014 editorial by Commissioner Adam Silver, which called for the U.S. federal government to legalize sports betting as a way to make the inevitable pastime more transparent, safer for bettors, and subject to strict regulatory oversight. Illegal betting already accounts for $400 billion in wagers, by some estimates, primarily through unregulated offshore Internet services or the old fashioned backroom bookie. The article sent a seismic shock through the professional sports world, as the official NBA position for over twenty years had consistently opposed any expansion of sports betting. “Times are changing fast,” said Jeff Ifrah. “Ideas that were once unthinkable ten or even five years ago are now becoming more accepted as logic begins to supersede antiquated and sometimes arbitrary morality laws. The advantages of legal, regulated gambling clearly outweigh the negatives. Gambling happens, and no laws can stop it. But it can be taken out of the shadows to make it safer for everyone involved, especially the consumer who is currently at the mercy of unknown foreign website operators with no recourse for fraud. It’s great to see a prominent organization like the NBA take a bold position on the issue, and I look forward to my discussion with Dan Spillane at GiGse in April.”

Jeff Ifrah is the founding partner of Ifrah Law, based in Washington, DC, practicing law for more than twenty years, licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. Concerned that expanded sports gambling will bring additional costs for ensuring their games are on the up-and-up, college athletic departments are looking for a way to get a piece of the action. A West Virginia casino is set to take bets within two weeks, with other states not far behind. IndyCar rallies together in wake of Wickens' accident

Aug 20, 2018

LONG POND, Pa. — Alexander Rossi and Robert Wickens have forged a bit of a rivalry this season. They've tangled on the track a few times, and exchanged the occasional verbal dart — some more playful than others, like when Wickens jokingly locked Rossi in a prison cell during a promotional event last month. But animosity between IndyCar drivers tends to dissolve quickly amid grim reminders of the sport's dangers. Wickens was just a few laps into the race at Pocono Raceway on Sunday when he connected with Ryan Hunter-Reay and soared into the catchfence. The fencing was shredded, and...

IndyCar's Wickens in hospital following violent Pocono crash

Aug 20, 2018

LONG POND, Pa. — IndyCar driver Robert Wickens is being treated for injuries to his lower extremities, right arm and spine following an accident early in a race at Pocono IndyCar said the Canadian sustained a pulmonary contusion Sunday and will undergo an MRI and probable surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest in Allentown. The 29-year-old IndyCar rookie was attempting to pass Ryan Hunter-Reay when the two cars slightly touched. That caused Hunter-Reay's car to careen into the wall and Wickens' car was pulled along for the ride. Once Wickens' car soared over Hunter-Reay's and hit the fence, it...

Rossi wins at Pocono in race marred by violent wreck

Aug 20, 2018

LONG POND, Pa. — Alexander Rossi was as worried as the rest of the IndyCar field when a violent wreck shot Robert Wickens' car airborne, ripped up the catchfence and left the tub of the rookie's Honda toppled on the asphalt. The crash at Pocono Raceway was the latest grim reminder how drivers in open-wheel racing put their lives on the line. "It's part of our job, right? You've got to compartmentalize," Rossi said. "You've got to accept it and deal with that emotion after the race." Wickens was airlifted to a hospital and was being treated for injuries to...

Verlander wins 200th, Astros back ahead of A's with 9-4 win

Aug 20, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. — Justin Verlander pitched just well enough to earn his 200th career win and the Houston Astros hit five home runs, beating the Oakland Athletics 9-4 Sunday to avoid a sweep and retake sole possession of the AL West lead. The surging A's had won the first two games at the Coliseum to tie shaky Houston atop the division. But Yuli Gurriel hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Evan Gattis, Alex Bergman, Marwin Gonzalez and Martin Maldonado later homered for the defending World Series champions. Maldonado also tripled and doubled. Verlander (12-8) gave up four...
