SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea's human rights commission plans to interview thousands of adult and child athletes about a culture of abuse in sports after a wave of female athletes came forward to say they had been raped or assaulted by their coaches. The yearlong investigation will cover 50 sports and include children competing for elementary, middle and high schools, Park Hong-geun, an official from the National Human Rights Commission, said Wednesday. He said the commission aims to interview all minor and adult athletes competing for scholastic and corporate league teams in speedskating and judo, which have been marred...

OTTAWA, Ontario — Led by the line of Derek Stepan, Vinnie Hinostroza and Richard Panik, the Arizona Coyotes added another victory to their recent surge. Hinostroza scored twice and had an assist to propel Arizona past the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Tuesday night. Stepan also scored for the Coyotes, who are 6-1-1 in their last eight games. Darcy Kuemper stopped 25 shots. "They came out flying in the first 10 minutes and (Kuemper) kept us in the game," Hinostroza said. "We stuck to what's worked for us and it led to some goals and some good defense. We've been playing...

A look at Malaysia's monarchy before sultans pick next king

Jan 23, 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — After stripping Malaysia's royal families of some of their powers during his 22-year stint as prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad almost didn't make it to the premiership a second time. Though largely a ceremonial post, Malaysia's monarch still signs off on most laws and appointments, including the prime minister, and hours after Mahathir and his alliance's stunning general election victory last May, King Sultan Muhammad V offered the job to someone else. The offer was rejected and Mahathir heaped pressure on the king by holding a series of news conferences. The king subsequently signed off on Mahathir,...

Smith back with Mavericks, starts against Clippers in return

Jan 23, 2019

DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith has returned after a week away from the team amid trade rumors, and with the second-year player's role in question because of the emergence of rookie sensation Luka Doncic. Smith started against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night after missing a two-game road trip. He was also away from the team for what was termed an illness for the Mavericks' previous home game against San Antonio last Wednesday. Rick Carlisle wouldn't get into reasons for Smith's absence Tuesday. But the coach did acknowledge during his radio show last week that he...
