Belt and Road Initiative Could Create Multiple Opportunities for Plastics Manufacturers in the UK

Plastic manufacturers are looking to China for future opportunities within the plastic manufacturing industry as the Belt and Road Initiative continues to develop.

In 2013, China announced the multi-billion dollar Belt and Road Initiative (or BRI). The project is designed to create a stronger infrastructure of routes on both land and via sea between China and Europe. The cost of the project so far is estimated to be around $1 trillion. Up to 2018, China had secured around $340bn in construction contracts along the Belt and Road and it’s clear that the project continues to move quickly.

Such a vast project has naturally drawn the attention of UK manufacturers as a potential gold mine of opportunity, particularly in light of Brexit. As the UK prepares to leave the European Union, it is still (at the time of writing) not clear whether a trade agreement with the European bloc will be agreed or not, or even what that agreement might be. China's industrial output expanded 6.3 percent year-on-year in June 2019, a significant number when compared to other countries around the world. By comparison, the UK grew by just 0.9%.
