The business model of getting as many people into the gym is not working during the COVID-19 era. A different approach to fitness centers is now emerging from Colorado.

Health and safety are top-of-mind as the world battles the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is another dangerous casualty lurking in its shadows that must be saved — fitness centers.
Efficient strength-training and cardiovascular exercise require a multitude of equipment, the kind of stuff most people can’t get at home. That’s what concerns Jean-Robert Barbette, world-class personal trainer and owner of two namesake gyms in Aspen and Basalt Colorado. He is worried that people will fall off their gym routines and sacrifice their fitness and health in the process.
“True athletes know they cannot achieve any real level of fitness they want at home using bodyweight and internet videos”, Barbette said.
“You’re never going to meet a professional athlete or fitness guru who works out solely at home,” he said. “We have 120 pieces of equipment at Jean-Robert’s Gym — this is how you attain lasting fitness, by working on specific muscle groups to achieve balance. This is done with strength conditioning in the gym with weights and the right equipment, preferably guided by a personal trainer — and you need this in addition to biking, hiking, skiing, and other activities.”
What’s in store for gyms?
With limitations on how many people can gather indoors, Barbette anticipates a massive shift in group fitness and big-box gyms. When the business model is to get as many people in the door as possible, that’s not going to work during a pandemic. Gold’s Gym and 24 Hour Fitness, for example, have already filed for bankruptcy and announced closures of hundreds of locations.
“The future of gyms is high-end and well equipped — everything has to be top-notch,” Barbette said, adding that boutique gyms are likely to emerge stronger. Jean Robert’s Gym has been focusing on semi-private and private personal training sessions.
