Mr David Guilleminot, the director of In Tune stated, “Awareness of acupuncture and osteopathy as a potential treatment for sciatica and hip pain is growing, and it can be a very easy and timely intervention to relieve and treat the core causes of the pain to improve patient well-being”

Sciatica presents as numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain anywhere along the sciatic nerve caused by compression of the nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. The compression and resulting pain is often the result of overextending and consequently straining the muscles of the lower back. Typically, the pain affects only one side of the body at a time.

The hip is the body’s largest ball and joint socket and fits together in a way that allows for fluid motion. It is built to withstand repeated movement. However, despite this durability, the cartilage can wear down and the muscles and tendons can be overused. In addition, bones in the hip can be broken in falls all resulting in hip pain.

There are a number of common causes of hip pain, the most common being osteoarthritis which leads to inflammation of the hip joint and reduction in the cartilage that acts as a cushion protecting your hip bones. Another common cause of hip pain is bursitis caused by little sacs of liquid called bursae which form between bone, tendon and muscle tissues. When these become inflamed, they cause pain. Whatever the cause of your hip pain, all of the osteopaths at the In Tune Natural Health Clinic, who are registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand, will diagnose the root cause and treatments will aim to address the underlying problem.

When asked about the motivation behind these treatments, qualified and registered osteopath, Mr David Guilleminot stated, “Unfortunately, so many people are suffering with pain perhaps caused by an injury, but often due to the long hours of sitting or standing with poor posture. The body works as a unit, which is why patients respond so well within a few treatments to releasing all the tension, asymmetries and compensatory patterns. So instead of just treating locally, my aim is to find the specific cause of pain and treat the surrounding structures. This gets the body moving and feeling better, and improves the general health and well-being of my patients.”
